Introduction Clarification

Welcome back! I will be clearing up any miscommunication you encountered while reading Introduction. So, to start off I'll be explaining the humanitarian trips that I have/will be attending, along with the organizations and what their main purpose of their organization is.

The first organization that I went with is Youth Making A Difference (YMAD). Their mission is "Provide leadership training and practical experiences that make a difference in the world, transforming the lives of the participants and those they serve." YMAD takes two groups high school juniors and seniors on a two-week expedition to India. One group goes to West Bengal, while the other group goes up North to Kullu. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Kullu. While in Kullu, Operation Parivar (which in Hindu means family) was split into three different schools, sizes of the group depended on how the big the schools was. My school was called Bandal and there were 31 fantastic children for six of us to teach.

Those kids were split into 5-6 groups depending on the day. We split the groups by age, which was helpful when it came to changing your teaching style. YMAD provides you with 5 lessons you need to know before you teach. You do have to come up with your own lesson, but you won't be alone. Everyone has to come up with their own lesson, and YMAD has designated time set aside at your Sunday meetings so you can work with your subject group and come up with a lesson. For example: my subject was Adjectives, and the three of us came up with the idea to teach about the world. You had to have the same material as lessons you were provided. That being a book, flashcards, object lesson, and any coloring pages/materials.

While there, you will be teaching 4 hour days, Monday-Friday. Parivar taught in the morning from 10-2, taking the same bus to and from, stopping at all 3 schools to pick and drop off the "teachers". In case you are wondering, Bandal was the last school to be dropped off and the first to be picked up. The commute for teaching, was one hour up and one hour down. That puts me on a bus for 2 hours plus teaching for four. It isn't as bad as it sounds, but that's coming for a girl who spent 52 hours on buses and planes to get to where I'd spend the next ten days. Don't get me wrong though, I loved my experience and wouldn't change it for the world! They are the reason that I decided to volunteer in Kiev, Ukraine with ILP, which leads me organization number two.

Organization number two, is International Language Programs (ILP). They send 18-25 year old boys and girls to 14 different countries around the world, ranging from Europe, Africa, Mexico, Caribbean etc. Your will be spending a semester (3-5 month period) depending which semester you volunteer, whether that's in the Spring, Summer or Fall. Most of the countries run all year long, while you may have some countries that don't have a summer semester.

I will be spending fall in Kiev, teaching English. I am not given any lessons to take with me, I have to plan them all and have them approved by my head teacher before I teach them. I will be given training on their teaching policy and what will be expected of me while there. I expect it to be hard, but because I have some experience teaching English, and lesson planning, I don't expect it to be as challenging as it would be if I hadn't participated with YMAD. So you could say that I was given an advantage haha.

This is a new adventure that I cannot wait to encounter! If any of you have questions, please DM me, or comment down below and I will do me best to answer them to the best of my ability.
